Many different types of entertainers arrived at Boonton High School on Halloween 2023 in the forms of Elvis, Raven, Colleen Ballinger, a fortune-telling gypsy and Rapunzel.

The competition was tough but each one took first place in a category in the costume contest.

Daniel Van Hoven’s Elvis took the  prize for best freshman costume. Van Hoven enjoys dressing up, so the costume contest peaked his interest. Because of his iconic outfits, Van Hoven believed that Elvis was a great pick for this year’s Halloween.

“I wanted a costume that would make people impressed and the iconic Elvis jumpsuit was a perfect choice,” he explained.

Van Hoven was shocked when he found out chosen as best overall as well.

“I actually did not think I would win for the best overall costume,” Van Hoven said. “I was very impressed with everyone’s costume at BHS so winning the contest was a complete surprise.”

Freddi Mahalick-Jaskot, the other freshman winner, took the cake for most creative with her gypsy costume. The costume consisted of materials that she had at home like cardboard, PVC pipes, lights, and fabric which were used for making the box.

Despite having a completely different costume at home to wear for Halloween, she chose the gypsy costume for the competition.

“I used this costume last year and got multiple awards for it, so I thought ‘Why not wear it again this year?'” Mahalick-Jaskot said.

Colleen Ballinger in the form of Sara Dolah – the sophomore winner  – was present along with her ukulele apology video. The idea of being Colleen Ballinger was planned months in advance.

“I have the idea of what I want to be for Halloween made beforehand so I know what I’ll need for the costume,” Dolah said.

Even though Dolah had the idea planned, Ballinger didn’t make the YouTube thumbnail until her morning art class with the help of Ms. Angelillo.

“I was surprised I won,” Dolah said. “The costume was very last minute and rushed and I didn’t have the right clothes for the ones she wore in the video. Overall, I’m glad people laughed at my costume. I thought it was a fun thing to poke fun at and it wouldn’t be possible without Ms. A and all her wisdom.”

Other contestants such as Ciera Silora – the winning senior – as Raven from Teen Titans and Ms. DiOrio – one of the winning teachers – as Rapunzel with her pet chameleon, Pascal. Their costumes consisted of creative ideas which were well thought out and that blew the judges away.

The wide variety of creativity shown by the contestants made the judges’ decisions difficult. With many contestants entering as well, it made deciding even harder.
