After several years of development, and much doubt as to whether or not it would actually be released, the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” film adaptation is finally here.

The film stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, who takes the night shift as a security guard at an abandoned pizzeria. The basic premise is exactly like the first game, which this movie takes the most direct inspiration from.

The production design, as well as the animatronics, do a great job of capturing the atmosphere of the games. The film’s story does feel rather accurate to the games as well, but there are some differences as well as problems with the story itself.

In terms of differences from the source material, there are some new characters like Abby, Mike’s sister, as well as Mike’s entire family. While these differences are not inherently a problem, and in some cases improve the source material as it gives Mike more character development, the story can be a bit unfriendly to those less familiar with the franchise, as things can get a bit more convoluted.

Other than these plot issues, including a rushed ending, I think this film is definitely enjoyable to watch if you are a fan of the franchise. However, if you aren’t already familiar with the games, books, I wouldn’t recommend it.

The film, released in late October of 2023, has a lot of references, Easter eggs, and story beats that don’t seem to make a lot of sense outside of the context of the games and books. If you are a fan, however, I certainly recommend watching this as it is a pretty good adaptation.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” can be streamed on Peacock TV, Vudu, ROW8, Amazon Prime or Apple TV. The movie is part of the Peacock subscription. On other services, the cost is $5.99.
