Is the “Euro Summer,” as popularized on social media, really worth it?

This past summer, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe and enjoy a three-week-long vacation. This article will be a guide to experiencing Europe, covering the food, landmarks, sightseeing, locals, and more.

The Destination

Starting off strong, I traveled to North Macedonia, specifically to a city called Ohrid. The city sits right on Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains and lies along the border between Albania and North Macedonia. The country has a rich history, and walking through the city, I noticed that many of the buildings were historic and well-preserved.

The Food

While on vacation, I had the opportunity to indulge in many traditional foods. One of my favorites was something called “burek,” a savory pastry commonly filled with meat, spinach and cheese, or simply cheese. I remember eating at least one of these pastries almost every day. One thing I noticed was that many Europeans treat dinner as a special experience. Compared to the United States, dinner is typically eaten later, usually between 7 and 9 p.m., and is seen as an opportunity to relax and socialize rather than simply being another meal.

The People

Many of the locals were extremely friendly, which made Ohrid an easy city to navigate. I felt comfortable asking locals for directions and recommendations whenever I needed them. Among the people, there was a strong sense of community, identity, and culture that was both insightful and beautiful to experience as a tourist.

The Sightseeing

Ohrid had plenty to see! Between the beautiful lake and the surrounding mountains, there was always something worth looking at. My favorite sights were the historic buildings throughout the city. One of the most notable was the Church of St. John at Kaneo. Dating back to the 13th century, its architecture and location on a cliffside overlooking the lake were breathtaking.

Should You “Euro Summer”?

If you are looking for an interesting and memorable vacation, I would definitely recommend taking a trip to Ohrid, North Macedonia. It combines culture, food, scenery, history, and tranquility while still offering the unique “Euro Summer” experience that has become so popular.
