Even before the GSA show themes were revealed at the winter pep rally, the Red and Black teams were locked in and determined to make their respective performances the best.
The Black Team elected to do “Snow White” while the Red Squad chose another Disney favorite, “The Lion King.”
“We chose ‘Snow White’ because it offered the strongest foundation for bringing our creative vision to life,” said Rebecca Johnson, one of the Black Team overalls. “From the moment we watched the film together, we knew it was the perfect fit.
“The story allows us to reimagine such a classic movie into a fresh and exciting show that highlights our creativity, personality, and passion.”
The Red Team has similar ambitions and plans to “put our blood, sweat, and tears into every practice, tech run and show night of the season,” according to Gianna De Francesco, one of the Black Squad’s overalls.
Why did they decide to do “The Lion King?”
“We chose it because of its upbeat and lively nature,” De Francesco said. “The Red Team is known to put on a fun and exciting show and we think that this show is the pure definition of what we bring to GSA. We are so excited to show everyone the true message of ‘The Lion King’ and how much this show means to all of us.”
De Francesco’s mother, Jill, whose maiden name was Walker, also was a Red Team captain her senior year. Her twin sister, Hayley, of course, bleeds Red, too. Hailey Tuohy’s older sister, Amanda, was a member of the light crew two years ago.
“This season is so special to me and my family,” Gianna De Francesco said. “We are all so incredibly invested in making the show the best it can be. My mom gives me tips and pointers on how to make events more appealing and advice on how to balance all of the hard work I have to do and that we must communicate among us overalls.”
Black Team values all of those who have taken part in GSA in the past.
“Legacy is a huge part of GSA,” Johnson said. “Many Black Team members have had siblings, parents, aunts, and cousins participate in GSA and it has kept the great tradition of GSA alive.”
Johnson indicated that the Black Team performance “will feature exciting and high-energy moments to captivate the audience from start to finish.”
“We are focusing on creating a fun, entertaining show that balances through acting and dancing,” Johnson said. “Through engaging choreography, expressive performance quality, and exciting surprises, we can’t wait to bring the story to life in the best way.”
Red Team, likewise, believes its family atmosphere and many dancers, cheerleaders and gymnasts will make a difference.
“On Red Team, there is a lot of talent from ballet dancers (Harley Kerian) to dancers (Alexandria D’Angelo),” De Francesco noted. “Those are just two of the over 70 talented people we have on this team… This brings a lot of fun and many ideas to the event.”
