Fans of horror movies determine the scariness of their favorites by jump scares – the scenes which shock viewers, causing their hearts to pound, pulses to race and bodies to lift out of their seats.
Many movies instill fear and a few take it a step or two beyond.
Right now, one of the movies keeping people from sleeping is “The Nun II,” which came to theaters in September. There are at least 20 jump scares in this movie which tells the story of an angry nun who is out for revenge. Rejected by a love interest before becoming a nun, she turns against God.
Sister Irene is looking into several deaths and runs into the monster, Valak. Obtaining St. Lucy’s eyes is his objective and the two eventually battle it out. In between, there are more gory murders, a request for a miracle and some suspense-filled moments.
One of the most frightening scenes involves a little girl hearing noises, possibly from the demon goat. Mother Superior checked on the situation and the evil animal/being came to life and chased them.
“Annabelle” (2014) is a supernatural thriller about a doll that a pregnant woman receives from her husband. It appears to be beautiful and is wearing a white dress. All of that changes as the doll wreaks havoc and draws worshippers of the devil to the house.
The doll comes to life a decade after the death of a young girl and harasses and attacks the neighbors, the couple and frightens everyone.
Men’s Health Magazine recently published an article, “The 62 Best Horror Movies of All Time,” and they’re films worth watching. Among the top ones are:
“The Exorcist” (1973) is about a young girl, played by Linda Blair, who is possessed by the devil and must undergo a ritual to rid her of the spirit of the devil. The girl is possessed by demons and shocking special effects show what she is going through.
The original “Halloween” from 1978 is another great one and features the struggle between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Evan Romano, who wrote the article, calls it a “horror masterpiece.” There are 12 more movies and they are just as frightening as the original.
