After a 33-year drought, the Boonton High School’s girls basketball team won a sectional title with a 41-35 victory against Park Ridge on Feb. 28.
Amanda Tuohy scored 17 points, took down 14 rebounds and added three assists while Jaden Visioli scored eight points and had four assists in the North Jersey Section 1, Group I championship game.
Ariana Jackson-Wach broke a 32-32 tie with two minutes minutes left in the game and, after that, Visioli and Jackie Cifelli helped expand the lead.
“It feels amazing to bring home a sectional title to BHS girls basketball for the first time in 33 years,” Visioli said. “We have put in so much work over the last four years. To see our hard work lead to success for ourselves and our school is special.”
Visioli, a senior, said that the key to team’s success was “chemistry on and off the court.”
The players have been playing together for awhile so they knew exactly how to play into one another’s strengths in games. Visioli also shared how the players “were also all extremely motivational to each other throughout the season and were all determined to achieve success.”
One of the many highlights of the epic 2022-23 season was a 42-33 upset of top-seeded Cresskill in the sectional semifinals. Tuohy turned in another exceptional effort, ending with 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Jackson-Wach played strong defense for the Bombers.
“Beating Cresskill was a whole team effort,” said Visioli, who will attend Cornell in the fall and study operations research and engineering. “We put our all into the game and were able to use our strengths against them. We made sure to lock down their top scorer and also were able to get the ball into key players in the paint to get some important baskets.”
This team chemistry and group motivation were essential in the team’s highly successful and memorable season.
Starters for Boonton were Visioli, Tuohy, Jackson-Wach, Cifelli and Amaya Campbell. Michael Carlin served as coach.
