Sculpting has long been one of Matthew Espinosa’s favorite hobbies.
That’s why Espinosa incorporated some special “handiwork” into their creation for the 2024 Boonton High School Pumpkin Decorating Contest.
Espinosa made a sculpture of Garfield, the orange comic strip cat, emerging from the top of a pumpkin. The innovative project took first place in the student category in the competition.
“I’m used to sculpting,” Espinosa said. “I wanted to add more to the pumpkin so it wouldn’t just be a pumpkin. I wanted it to be cute and sweet so people would think it was adorable.”
And Espinosa achieved the desired reaction and wound up atop the talented entries.
Richenda Perez took second in the student category with “Midnight Carriage” and Espinosa’s brother, Joel DeJesus, was third with “Doodlebob.”
Other student entries, each one of them exceptional, were as follows:
“Beetlejuice” and “The Addams Family” – Freddi Mahalick-Jaskot
“Johnathan” – Joseph Hart
“Santa Before Christmas” – Marwan Makey
“Dunkin’ the Pumpkin” – Sadie Coughlin, Olivia Tanis
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” – Riley Wendt
“Eye” – Gavin Shollenberger
“Pumpkin in a Watermelon’s Costume” – Zubeide Chikot
“Michael Myers’ Massacre” – Starlyn Perry
“Memory Lane” – Lynnet Puerto

The staff category featured these amazing pumpkins:

“The Pumpkin King” – Third place – Mr. Matarazzo
“Stuck in the Middle with You” – Mrs. Tambakis, Zeanie Correa
