There was a big-game environment – trash talking included – when Boonton’s Student-Faculty Basketball Game was held on Monday, Feb. 12.

Sponsored by the Class of 2018, the game drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 250 people. The game was tight until the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the faculty attained a 41-36 victory.

“The game was a lot of fun,” said Ryan Lourick, a member of the all-senior student team. “All the guys and the teachers were having a great time. What made it better was the fact that all of the students who weren’t playing came to watch and were getting excited throughout the game.”

Some of the highlights:

***Mr. Hurd started the evening by announcing each player as they took the court. All of the players joined arms when Celine Lindain sang the National Anthem. Commentators Sebastian Bruno and Patrick Nathan keep the crowd entertained throughout the night.

Ryan Lourick, left, displays intensity as he tries to swipe the ball from Coach Norton.

***Basketballs were given away to fans and beach balls were batted around in the stands. Pennants and pictures of teachers were raised throughout the game to show school spirit. Stress basketballs were given out to fans and candy was thrown out each quarter. Raffle tickets were distributed and more than 20 prizes were awarded.

***Freshman Sean Tucker won Knockout and gave the basketball he won to a little girl.

***Mr. Goodell, the athletic trainer, was a rebound machine, demonstrating his prowess on the boards.

***Jeremy “Figgs” Foligno was high scorer for the seniors, netting the most 3-pointers.

***Grant “Barries and Toast” Barrientos made a fast-break move that crushed the “The Great” Ms. Greulich but that didn’t stop her.

***Shakay “Shaq Daddy Deluxe” Simpson was the only senior girl who played the entire game and was knocked down by Mr. Forman, the “Dean of Defense.” She, too, survived and kept moving.

***The seniors were coached by Uzair Ullah and Joe Chermak. Ullah said that defense was stressed and the seniors stayed fresh by rotating in every five minutes. Ullah was impressed in particular when Barrientos made a behind-the-back move. Ullah admitted to being worried about guarding Mr. Forman and Mr. LaPointe.

Lourick enjoyed the banter that occurred between the students and faculty. However, he was disappointed to be on the losing side.

“Yeah, of course, we were trash talking to teachers,” Lourick said. “We had to show them we came to play and came to win. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull off the ‘W’ but it was definitely a great experience and I hope it continues for years to come.”
