Boonton High School’s STEM Academy recently organized a heartwarming and impactful fundraiser in support of the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation. Held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event brought together students, faculty, and the local community to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and support services.
The fundraiser featured the sale of pink hair extensions, symbolizing solidarity with those affected by breast cancer. Students and staff were excited to participate, and the pink hair extensions quickly became a hit across the school, with many proudly wearing them to show their support. The presence of pink throughout the school was a visual reminder of the collective effort to combat this devastating disease.
A key contributor to the event’s success was Bethanie Young, owner of BCY Artistry in Denville. Young, who has been working in the beauty industry since 2013, offers hair extensions, wigs, and other services designed to help people feel their best. Her motto is “Every woman deserves to feel beautiful.” That aligned perfectly with the cause, and her skillful work with the pink hair extensions helped make the event both stylish and meaningful. The fundraiser could not have been done without her expertise and generous contribution.
“My high school did something like this,” said Ms. Fondacaro, the STEM Academy coordinator. “I liked the idea. Thought kids would be excited about getting the pink extensions in their hair. It raised a lot of money then and it raised a lot of money now.”
The STEM Academy spearheaded the event, combining their academic skills with a passion for community service. The students took charge and made it possible, promoting the endeavor while demonstrating leadership, collaboration and a commitment to making a difference.
The proceeds from the event were donated to the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to top-quality breast health services for underserved communities. The funds raised will help support vital programs that offer screenings, treatment, and support for those battling breast cancer.
The event was a resounding success, exceeding expectations both in terms of participation and the amount of funds raised. The collaborative spirit of the BHS students, Young’s involvement, and the overwhelming support from the community contributed to this achievement. The STEM Academy is proud to have been a part of such a meaningful cause and looks forward to continuing its efforts to raise awareness and funds for important community initiatives.
Burhan Bajwa, a senior, used his free time to make informational materials, including a tri-fold display and flyers. His involvement with the STEM fundraiser will be part of his BHS Gateway Academy Senior Passion Project.
“Burhan will be doing more in the future,” Fondacaro said. “He and his group did a great job getting information out there and helping the event run smoothly.”
As the student body reflects on the success of this fundraiser, it’s clear that the event was not just about selling pink hair extensions but about coming together as a community to support those in need and bring attention to a cause that affects so many lives. With their efforts, they hope to inspire others to take action, no matter how small, to make a positive impact in the fight against breast cancer.
