This upcoming Thursday, April 22, 2021, we will be having our annual Earth Day! Earth Day, which began in 1970, is a worldwide event designated to help show support for our Earth and help give it back some love. It’s to help remind us that we should take care of Earth, and it’s amazing to see the wide range of events that are organized all across the globe. Even with the pandemic, you can still do little activities to show your support.

Here are some simple ideas:

1. Invest in reusable water bottles or bags

Buying reusable water bottles, bags, containers, straws, etc. is a great way to help save the planet. It helps cut down on our waste and, in general, can be very convenient. For example, it’s much easier to pick out which water bottle is yours if it’s a bright blue metal bottle in comparison to a normal plastic one. Usually, reusable items like these are super customizable, or at least come in so many different varieties, so you can make it all extra special to you. You can go anywhere to get items like these. Good places would be Walmart, Target, and Amazon.

2. Ride a bike or take a walk instead of driving

If you can, try your best to walk or use a bike (if you can ride) instead of driving. It would be nice for the Earth to spare it a little bit of extra pollution, and getting a fresh breath of air is great for you, too! Plus, some exercise isn’t bad either. Taking walks or biking is just overall very beneficial to both you and our Earth. If you do this, I’d highly suggest listening to music or a podcast or doing it with a friend, whether you’re on call, talking, or in real life. Make sure you’re socially distancing and wearing a mask, though!

3. Go to your local park and get in touch with some nature

Going to your local park is something really nice to do to celebrate Earth Day. It’s all about appreciating Earth and the lovely nature that grows and surrounds us, so visiting a park is perfect for that. You could even bring a couple of friends over to have a nice picnic since it’s outdoors and COVID-friendly given the proper precautions. It’s not limited to parks either. Being in touch with nature, overall, is a nice way to spend the day.

4. Watch a nature documentary or show

If you’re super into movies or want to learn more, viewing a nature documentary at home is perfect for you. (Reading some books is a good alternative to film if that’s your preference). You can find educational documentaries anywhere, like Hulu or Netflix. Disney Plus also has some great ones since they have a section dedicated to National Geographic. If you don’t have a subscription to any of these streaming services, you can browse through YouTube for some videos. Educating yourself on the planet is especially helpful, but the most important step is taking action using that information. Here’s a link to a list of recommendations from Rotten Tomatoes!

5. Do a virtual tour of a national park

I personally adore traveling and gravely miss it due to the pandemic because I loved looking at new places and exploring. Thankfully though, a lot of our national parks offer virtual tours you can experience right at home. Complete with gorgeous scenic pictures and fun facts, it can give you a taste of how it feels to be there in real life. The national parks that have virtual tours include Virgin Islands National Park, Crater Lake National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and so many others. If you’re a fan of nature and traveling, there’s bound to be a national park of interest to you, so what better time to try it out than on Earth Day?

Earth Day is a perfect time to be mindful of everything around you and share some appreciation, along with doing nice things for the planet. However, the most helpful thing you can do is maintain some healthy habits for the environment past Earth Day. April 22nd isn’t and shouldn’t be the only day that you’re Earth-friendly. You should always attempt to incorporate it into your regular schedule. Celebrate Earth Day on April 22 and every other day!
