It was very fitting that the Boonton Field Hockey Team’s theme for the 2023 tailgate was “Out Of This World.”

The dominant squad, still unbeaten, added two off-the-field victories by taking first overall as well as best food honors at the event, which kicked off homecoming weekend on Friday, Sept. 22.

It doesn’t matter what they do, the field hockey squad just keeps on coming out on top.

“It’s nice to be recognized because we put a lot of time and effort into it,” Maggio, a senior midfielder, said of tailgate.

The “Out Of This World” theme is also represented on the Bombers’ scrimmage shirts and in their locker room, which is decorated with galaxies and stars. The motto on the shirts reads “Working together, tiny stars light the universe. That’s the power of teamwork.”

Italian food and cupcakes were on the menu at the field hockey tailgate table.

Walking in, many people first noticed the cheerleaders’  table, which had a pirates theme. Boonton colors were prominent and were the inspiration for the theme, which took the tailgate award for most student interaction.

The BHS Teaching & Learning Academy utilized a “Barbie” theme and was voted most creative. Their slogan was “I Am Kenough,” a song from the movie that has taken the world by storm.

Each class had a table. The Class of 2026 had a candy bag raffle to go with a movie theater/cinema theme. “Junior Jewels” was the Class of 2025 theme. The students representing the class gave out face jewels and stickers.

The famous pie-in-the-face raffle was held by the Class of 2024. The one administrator and two teachers who were voted on were Mr. Matarazzo, Ms. DiTrolio, and Mr. Forman. Mr. Forman, a vice principal, was pied by Ashlee Sparer. The second teacher picked was Mr. Matarazzo with McKayla Williams as chosen as the student to pie him.

Some other challenges and games that took place were a Connect Four tournament (T.A.G.) and trivia and face painting by the drama club. Those who answered trivia questions correctly earned a lollipop. One of the questions was “How many minutes are there in a year?”

At the Makerspace table, tailgate attendees were able to purchase items made by the members the club. Prices ranged from $1 to $5.

Disco ruled at the GSA table, where people entered raffles to win merchandise or a snack box.

After enjoying the tailgate event, many people watched the Bombers’ football team, behind Sylas White’s  three touchdowns, defeat Parsippany 52-20 in the Old Shoe Game. White rushed for 237 yards for Boonton, which secured a 21-7 first-quarter lead.

On the way into the stadium, fans donated non-perishable food and hygiene products to a drive organized by the BHS Teaching & Learning Academy. Items were for the benefit the Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry at the First Presbyterian Church.

The academy’s coordinator, Ms. Henry, was pleased by the amount of items donated and noted that “We literally filled up the pantry.”

“It took nine football players to put everything in my car,” she said.

Homecoming festivities were part of the weekend. A dance was held the following day at the Elks Lodge.

Chosen to the homecoming court were seniors Adison Shollenberger and Charlie Hurd, juniors Peter Clear and Ashley Suplicki, sophomores Gavin Shollenberger and Alexandria D’Angelo and freshmen Daniel Van Hoven and Liliana Collucci.
