Special Olympics developed the Unified Schools Program to promote physical activity and good health.
The program provides classroom and community experiences which foster inclusion within schools. Boonton High School is currently participating in soccer, basketball and track and field with other schools within Morris County. Any student is welcome to join and help promote inclusion in school and have fun!
Ms. Buchanan is the staff member who helped establish the program at BHS. She does a fantastic job and wants all of her students be the best versions of themselves.
“I decided to bring unified soccer and basketball to the school because it is a great way for our students to stay active and meet new people,” Ms. Buchanan said. “I wanted to make sure that all year round, every student has the opportunity to play sports and socialize with people they might not see every day.”
Ms. Buchanan, a social worker and girls lacrosse coach, enjoys spending her time outside the classroom with diverse groups of students and athletes. She loves seeing the students who participate make new friendships with peers in the school. She strives to make all of the participants feel included. It’s obvious from her character that she has a kind heart.
Since October 2022, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know new people and even develop fresh relationships with individuals.
When I’m with them, I have a terrific time and laugh nonstop. I genuinely believe that we are all one and I enjoy watching my friends’ team get together to compete in the games.
The most significant thing in life is to spend time with one another, regardless of whether we win, lose or tie. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to participate in this program to lend a hand, and I wholeheartedly urge everyone to do the same.
