On Thursday, Oct. 10, Boonton High School held its much-anticipated annual tailgate and, as always, it was a smashing success. Twenty clubs and sports teams hosted tables at the event, which was a perfect blend of school spirit, creativity, and fun.

A variety of tables were featured at the evening event, with each one showcasing unique themes. The cheerleading squad took home the award for best theme with a dynamic race car-inspired setup, revving up excitement across the event. Cheerleaders wore matching race car driver jackets and served beverages from their fueling station.

The BHS Teaching and Learning Academy snagged the most creative award with a playful Minions-themed table, a hit among students and staff alike. Rose Van Saders, a member of the Gateway Academy, served as writer and director of a party scene from “Alice in Wonderland,” which was acted out twice during the event.

“I wanted to choose a story that was recognizable to a young audience,” said Van Saders of the mini play, which is part of a Gateway project. “I plan to do a few more scenes from books this year.”

Food and entertainment were also a major part of the event’s appeal. The Spanish Club stood out with the best food and activities, offering delicious snacks and a DJ that drew a constant crowd. The empanadas, Spanish soda and Tres Leches Cake, donated by Tentaciones Columbianas, Noches de Columbia and Sazon Latino, were delicious.

“This was my first tailgate,” Mr. Perez, the Spanish Club adviser, said. “It’s great to get the community involved and for the restaurants to be a part of it as well. Everyone benefited because of the generous contributions.”

The field hockey team was recognized for having the most student involvement. Students flocked to their table throughout the evening.

However, the biggest win of the night went to the softball team, which earned top overall honors. Their table was another impressive favorite, bringing together a perfect combination of fun and school pride.

Softball held a silent auction for a drill, circular saw and speaker. There was a carousel of nuts, an abundance of ballgame foods and snacks, as well as a face hole cutout display.

With lively music, plenty of food, and friendly competition, the BHS 2024 Tailgate once again proved to be a highlight of the school year. The event concluded with a thrilling football game and wrapped up an unforgettable night of school pride and community spirit.
