A group of students from Boonton High School had the unique opportunity of visiting AbbVie, a research institute, where they were introduced to groundbreaking work in medical device innovation and tissue research.

The field trip, organized by Ms. Gilbert, provided an eye-opening glimpse into the behind-the-scenes processes that drive advancements in healthcare.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the visit, which took place on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, was learning about the preparation and use of donated tissues. We saw how scientists carefully handle these tissues, preserving their integrity for research and medical applications. This involves not only understanding the biological properties but also ensuring that everything is done in a highly controlled, sterile environment.

A key takeaway was witnessing the meticulous procedures followed by staff to maintain sterility. We observed the extensive dressing protocols required before entering clean rooms, the places where medical devices are developed and tissues are handled. From specialized suits to disinfecting hands, the importance of preventing contamination was emphasized at every step.

Additionally, we were introduced to the innovative process of developing new medical devices. The researchers explained how cutting-edge technology, combined with years of scientific research, helped them design devices that can improve patient outcomes.

In addition, we learned about the rigorous testing and approval processes that these devices must undergo to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Overall, the experience was incredible and allowed BHS students to gain a deeper understanding of the vital work that goes into creating life-saving medical technologies.

It was inspiring to see how AbbVie is pushing the boundaries of medicine and contributing to a healthier future.
