Season openers often bring on jitters and uneasiness.

Boonton’s girls lacrosse team, however, experienced neither of those negative factors and rolled to a 14-10 victory over visiting High Point on Thursday, March 28.

The Bombers, led by senior Nicole Krozser and freshman Bethany Glaser, who had five goals and an assist apiece, were actually the opposite: Confident and focused. And, the defense, buoyed by Kayla Manna and Kate Crooker, did its part as Boonton secured its first opening-day win in the history of the program.

“The girls played together and worked together as a team,” Bombers coach Colleen Faessinger said. “The defense worked really hard. A lot of players contributed offensively.”

In addition to Krozser and Bethany Glaser, Boonton received two goals from Hannah Glaser and single scores from Manna and Emily Cunningham.

Hannah Glaser, a sophomore attack/midfielder, said “It was one of the best feelings because we all worked together as a team for the win. What I will remember is the positive energy going into the game and how we all really went in there working as a team.”

The Bombers got off to a fast start on their coach’s birthday, gaining a 9-4 halftime lead. On attack, Boonton didn’t let up, firing in five more goals in the second half. Another key to the win was the play of goalie Isabella Havell, who had 23 saves.

“I was excited to win the opener,” Bethany Glaser said. “I will remember everyone running to Bella at the end of the game.”

Manna considered the triumph “great” and “amazing.”

“We gave it all of our heart,” Manna said. “We put everything on the field.”

After four games, the Bombers were 3-1. From there, they lost eight of their next nine games. Three of those games were very hard fought as Boonton, whose record was 4-7 as of April 23, fell to Jefferson, Tenafly and Morris Hills by two goals or less.

The Bombers got back on track and finished the season strong, registering three consecutive wins. They did so behind the seniors – Leah Durkin, Krozser, Crooker and Cunningham.

Krozser ended her senior campaign with 64 goals and 16 assists. Hannah Glaser and her sister, Bethany, had 27 and 25 goals, respectively. Havell recorded 177 saves for the Bombers, who had a 7-10 record.
